On October 30, 2024, we gathered at the Grahame Park Community Centre for a heartfelt Breast Cancer Awareness event, where community members, healthcare professionals, and advocates came together with one shared goal—to increase awareness and provide support around breast cancer screening and care. The day was filled with meaningful discussions, personal journeys, and resources to empower everyone to take proactive steps in their health.
Insights from North London, Central, and East London Breast Screening Services
One of our guest speakers was from the Health Promotions Team at the Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust. The team offered valuable guidance on breast cancer screening, emphasising the importance of being familiar with one’s own body and recognising early signs. They shared that 23% of breast cancers are preventable through lifestyle adjustments, reinforcing that it’s never too late to make a positive change. By detecting changes early through regular screening, breast cancer can often be treated more effectively.
The team introduced attendees to the TLC Method for Breast Awareness:
- Touch your breasts: Can you feel anything unusual?
- Look for changes: Is there any difference in shape, texture, or appearance?
- Check with your doctor if you notice anything unusual.
Additionally, they shared resources from Know Your Lemons, an initiative to help improve early detection of breast cancer through symptom and screening education in a fun, accessible, and inclusive way.
Lifestyle Choices & Cancer Prevention
Dr. Nadira Ali from The GHC Outreach highlighted actionable lifestyle choices that can help lower cancer risk. While factors like age and genetics cannot be changed, healthier daily habits such as a balanced diet, reducing alcohol, staying active, and getting quality sleep can make a real difference. Her message resonated with everyone, reminding us all that small choices today can impact our future health.
Mirabell’s Journey: Finding Strength & Clarity
One of the day’s most touching moments was when Mirabell shared her journey with breast cancer. She reminded us that a diagnosis doesn’t define one’s worth or identity and encouraged others to take charge of their care by asking questions and understanding each step of their treatment. In her words, “It’s my body, and if I’m to make a decision, I need to know what you’re doing and why.” Her story illustrated the importance of resilience and clear communication with healthcare providers, leaving a lasting impression on many. The Breast Cancer Now Generations Study
We were fortunate to have Heather, a volunteer from Breast Cancer Now, share insights into the Generations Study, a groundbreaking 40-year research project tracking over 110,000 women. The study seeks to understand the causes of breast cancer to support future generations. Heather shared that while breast cancer diagnoses have risen, early detection and breast awareness are helping save lives by enabling earlier intervention. Her insights encouraged everyone to remain proactive in their health.
Building Community & Support
As we wrapped up the event, we expressed deep gratitude to all speakers, organisers, and attendees. The success of the day underscored the strength of our community in fostering awareness and providing support for those affected by breast cancer.
