In September, Papyrus, the youth suicide prevention charity behind HOPELINE247, closed after almost thirty years of work. The helpline stopped operating immediately, leaving a real gap for the young people, families and professionals who relied on it.
If HOPELINE247 was a service you’d used before, or one you’d been told to turn to, we know this news might be unsettling. So we’ve put together a clear list of where to go instead, whether you need to talk to someone right now, or you’re looking for ongoing support closer to home.
If you need to talk to someone right now
- Samaritans, 24/7 phone support, call 116 123
- Shout, 24/7 text support, text SHOUT to 85258
- NHS 111, select option 2 for mental health support, available 24/7
- Childline, 24/7 phone support for under 19s, call 0800 1111
- CALM (Campaign Against Living Miserably), helpline open 5pm to midnight
In an emergency, always call 999 or go to A&E.
Support closer to home
Papyrus closing doesn’t mean support has disappeared. CB Plus runs several services built around exactly this kind of early, ongoing support:
- Young People Thrive, for young people navigating their mental health and wellbeing. Email ypt@cbplus.org.uk or call 0203 984 4096.
- Barnet Wellbeing Service, for adults looking for wellbeing support across the borough.
- The Stay Project, working with organisations and frontline staff supporting people who may be experiencing suicidal thoughts. Email thestayproject@cbplus.org.uk.
One service closing doesn’t mean support has run out. If you’re not sure where to start, reach out to us directly, and we’ll help point you in the right direction.
